Revelations Blog Tour: Review + Giveaway!

Revelations is almost upon us and I, for one, am so excited for this next step in Evie's journey to be out in the world!

Title: REVELATIONS
Author: J.A. Souders
Pub. Date: November 5, 2013
Publisher: TOR Teen
Pages: 352

Six weeks after her arrival on the Surface, Evelyn Winters is no closer to unlocking the memories lost in her subconscious than she was when she first came. Isolated in a strange new society, Evie has only Gavin Hunter to remind her of who she once was.

But even with a clean slate, it’s easy to see that Evie doesn’t fit in on the Surface. And as her differences make her feel more and more alone, she can’t help but yearn for that place she doesn’t remember: the isolated city hidden in the depths of the ocean. Elysium. Home.

But she can’t exactly tell Gavin what she’s feeling. Not when he’s the one who helped her escape Elysium in the first place, and has the scars to prove it. Though the doctors say otherwise, Gavin believes that Evie just needs time. And if her memories don’t come back, well, maybe she’s better off not remembering her past.

But the decision may be out of their hands when Evie’s ever-elusive memories begin to collide with reality. People and images from her past appear in the most unlikely places, haunting her, provoking her…and making her seem not only strange but dangerous.

Evie and Gavin can’t wait around for her memories to return. They’ll have to journey across the Outlands of the Surface to find help, and in the end, their search may just lead them back to the place it all started…

I absolutely adored Renegade, it's a book that I've been fangirling over quite a bit since I read it last year, so I was incredibly excited to start in on Revelations. And to be honest, I was also a little bit nervous, because we all know the second book in a trilogy can sometimes be a little disappointing. And while the beginning of Revelations was a little slow to start for me, once it picked up it took off and went all kinds of places I never would have expected.

In the beginning we are with Evie and Gavin in his village, and while it was nice to get some background on Gavin and where he's from, other than Evie's "episodes" nothing really happens while we are there. Once Evie, Gavin, and his former best friend Asher hit the Outlands to get Evie to a better doctor, that's when things really start to get crazy.

I really liked the dynamic between the three of them once the started on their journey. Gavin does not like Asher because of something that happened in their past and he isn't afraid to be vocal about it, while Asher just kind of goes with the flow, never really instigating, he's mostly a happy, carefree guy. Evie is a little lost this time around, because things are happening to her that she can't explain, not to mention, she doesn't remember her life before she came to the Surface and Gavin isn't telling.

The characters stumble across some scary stuff while they are making their way to the city and not all of them are beasts. The way that J.A. Souders builds this new world, which is so different from the underwater confines of Elysium, is just as effective. This isn't the Earth that we are used to, wars have made sure of that, but it's enough like it that it becomes that much scarier.

There are so many secrets between all of the characters in this story and every time more are revealed it just gives you something else to gasp about. J.A. Souders has built an excellent framework of characters and two creepy worlds, where you never know what is around the next corner and you can never be sure anyone is quite who they are supposed to be. I really enjoyed this second book and I am eagerly awaiting book three. Especially considering what we find out near the end of Revelations! I can't wait to see what happens next!

About J.A:

J.A. SOUDERS is the author of the Elysium Chronicles and lives in the land of sunshine and palm trees with her husband and two children where she spends her time writing about the monsters under the bed, day dreaming about living in an underwater colony, and failing miserably at playing video games.

Review: Relic: The Books of Eva, Giveaway + Relic Revealed Sweepstakes from @Soho_Teen

Release Date: October 29th, 2013
Publisher: Soho Teen

The truth will test you...

For fans of Game of Thrones and The Hunger Games: high fantasy and dystopia meet in this high-stakes tale of a civilization built on lies and the girl who single-handedly brings it down.

When Eva’s twin brother, Eamon, falls to his death just a few months before he is due to participate in The Testing, no one expects Eva to take his place. She’s a Maiden, slated for embroidery classes, curtseys, and soon a prestigious marriage befitting the daughter of an Aerie ruler. But Eva insists on honoring her brother by becoming a Testor. After all, she wouldn’t be the first Maiden to Test, just the first in 150 years.

Eva knows the Testing is no dance class. Gallant Testors train for their entire lives to search icy wastelands for Relics: artifacts of the corrupt civilization that existed before The Healing drowned the world. Out in the Boundary Lands, Eva must rely on every moment of the lightning-quick training she received from Lukas—her servant, a Boundary native, and her closest friend now that Eamon is gone.

But there are threats in The Testing beyond what Lukas could have prepared her for. And no one could have imagined the danger Eva unleashes when she discovers a Relic that shakes the Aerie to its core.

I'm torn on this one. There were definitely things about it I enjoyed, and my desire to find out which direction things went for Eva kept me turning the pages, but there were some things that took me out of the story. I appreciate what the author was doing by putting elements of our world's technology into this new world, where things have regressed majorly, but every time they spoke of their perception of these items in the past it was a little too silly for me.

However, The Testing itself was quite intriguing. I like the idea of traveling out into the unknown parts of their world and searching for artifacts, or relics, from the old world. I also thought it was quite clever that it was a few young people from their society that commit to do this testing, as a way of competing for the spot as one of the next leaders of their people. Another interesting part was that they each wrote chronicles for each relic they found, creating the story behind the artifact, so that they can learn about the past and not repeat the mistakes.

Overall I did enjoy the story and the small twist at the end has definitely gotten me curious about where things are going to go from here. I also have some serious suspicions about a particular character. Despite a few gripes, the story was interesting enough that I think I will most likely read the next book once it's available.

And now for the good stuff! I'm giving you all the chance to win a copy of Relic: The Books of Eva and a matching Tote bag!

This is our second—and last—chance. Thanks to the Gods, and thanks to the Testing.

Each year, the finest Gallants in New North embark on the Testing, a harrowing rite of passage through the frozen wastelands to recover Relics, artifacts from the evil time before the Healing. About these Relics the Testors construct their Chronicles, illustrating mankind’s depravity, his Vanity, his love of Tech, his sins too numerous to count. All true Chronicles are collected and made part of the Lex’s Holy Truths, year by year.

The Chronicle. Nothing is more vital to the resolve of the inhabitants of the New North, the last inhabitants of an Earth flooded by the Healing. But not all Chronicles are deemed True. And not all Testors are Gallants. One year there was a Maiden, Madeline, the first but not the last. Braving the perils of the Testing, she discovered a Relic that, if Chronicled, would be the New North’s downfall...

Review: An Affair to Dismember by Elise Sax

Release Date: January 29th, 2013
Publisher: Ballantine Books

Three months has been Gladie Burger’s limit when it comes to staying in one place: She’s always been a temp agency kind of girl, ever ready to move on. That’s why Gladie is more than a little skeptical when her eccentric Grandma Zelda recruits her to the family business in the quaint small town of Cannes, California. Gladie is also highly unqualified: Her beloved grandmother’s business is matchmaking, and Gladie has a terrible track record with romance. Still, despite evidence to the contrary, Zelda is convinced that her granddaughter has “the gift.” But when the going gets tough, Gladie wonders if this gift has a return policy.

When Zelda’s neighbor drops dead in his kitchen, Gladie is swept into his bizarre family’s drama. Despite warnings from the (distractingly gorgeous) chief of police to steer clear of his investigation, Gladie is out to prove that her neighbor’s death was murder. It’s not too long before she’s in way over her head—with the hunky police chief, a dysfunctional family full of possible killers, and yet another mysterious and handsome man, whose attentions she’s unable to ignore. Gladie is clearly being pursued—either by true love or by a murderer. Who will catch her first?

I don't really read many mystery books and, to be honest, I'm not really sure why. On the occasion that I do pick one up, I almost always end up enjoying it. An Affair to Dismember was no different. Gladie's life isn't exactly what she'd thought it would be, but while staying at her grandmother's home, she's managed to get comfortable. Mostly. Trying to become a matchmaker like her grandmother isn't easy, especially when Gladie seems to find trouble more than she finds love matches.

The patriarch of the family that lives across the street from her grandmother has died, and for some reason the other members of that family are convinced that Gladie is the one to prove it wasn't actually an accident. She's hesistant at first, but it doesn't take long for her curiosity to get the best of her and she begins to investigate, at the behest of the hot new sheriff in town. Gladie can't seem to stay away from trouble, so he's finding it hard to stay away from Gladie, though as the story goes on, it becomes increasingly obvious that he isn't sure he wants to stay away.  And, of course, there is the mysterious and hot new neighbor who is almost instantly interested in getting to know Gladie better. He always seems to be around when he's needed, but no one really knows anything about him or where he's come from.

Hilarity, hijinks, twists and turns abound in this fun, romantic mystery. There are a lot of things going on in the little town of Canne, California and quite a quirky bunch of people that populate it. I have to say, I suspected almost everyone at least once while I was reading, and for me that is the sign of a good mystery. So if you're a fan of mystery novels, or even if you aren't, An Affair to Dismember is an incredibly funny and fun read. I can't wait to dive in to book two!

Be Sure to check out the rest of the series!

Review: This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales

Release Date: September 17th, 2013
Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux

Making friends has never been Elise Dembowski’s strong suit. All throughout her life, she’s been the butt of every joke and the outsider in every conversation. When a final attempt at popularity fails, Elise nearly gives up. Then she stumbles upon a warehouse party where she meets Vicky, a girl in a band who accepts her; Char, a cute, yet mysterious disc jockey; Pippa, a carefree spirit from England; and most importantly, a love for DJing.

It's been a while since I got so wrapped up in a book. I loved the premise of this book from the start, mostly because I was intrigued by the main character developing a love of DJing, but also because I love a story about the invisible girl. There are so many directions a story like that could go, but Elise's might just be my favorite. I don't know anything about the world of underground parties and DJing and I can't really relate to Elise's school experience, but none of that mattered because I felt like I really got to know Elise and I desperately wanted her to find herself. Her journey wasn't the easiest and she made some pretty awful decisions, in my opinion, but her choices and rebellions were totally believable.

Elise was great, but so were the people that made up her world. She is a child of divorce and has three parents who don't really know anything about her, but still love her all the same. She's got a couple of younger siblings who were so wonderful, especially her precocious little sister, I loved the relationship between the two of them. Of course, my favorite of the side characters was Vicky, a girl she meets outside the warehouse party and who is instantly charmed by her. Their friendship, and just Vicky in general, was such a large and wonderful part of the story. I think everyone would be lucky enough to know someone like Vicky. I really can't say enough good things about this one. It's a phenomenal story about discovering who you are and who you want to be. So worth the loss of sleep!

Bookish A to Z Survey!

I've been really absent from the blogging world in the last few months, apart from a few posts here and there for blog tours I participated in, I haven't really spent much time around here. Recently I was stalking some of the blogs I used to follow regularly and stumbled upon this cool survey from Jamie at The Perpetual Page-Turner and thought I'd pop one up on my page! It's a fun little survey so I just had to borrow it, the graphic is hers, too :0)

Author you’ve read the most books from:

Richelle Mead! Courtesy of her fabulous Vampire Academy series, along with the first books in a couple of her other series :0)

Best Sequel Ever:

We’ll Always Have Summer by Jenny Han. While it’s the third, and final, book in the series it’s still technically a sequel and I just love that book so hard!

Currently Reading:

I’m a terribly indecisive person, so I’m actually reading three different books at the moment…

Deity by Jennifer L. Armentrout, What I Thought Was True by Huntley Fitzpatrick, and An Affair to Dismember by Elise Sax

Book ADD, folks :0)

Drink of Choice While Reading:

It really depends on my mood, but it’s always either coffee or tea.

E-reader or Physical Book?

I used to be a die-hard physical book person, but since I got my Nook HD (which ironically, I use more as a Kindle) I have been all about the e-books.

Fictional Character You Probably Would Have Actually Dated In High School:

Colby from The Disenchantments…I had a thing for awkward boys with less than stellar self-esteem, they were always incredibly loyal (boy does that make me sound like a jerk).

Glad You Gave This Book A Chance:

Emily’s Dress and Other Missing Things by Kathryn Burak. It was an auto-approve review copy so I downloaded it, then promptly forgot about it entirely. I was clearing out my ADE files and saw it was expiring in 2 days, so I decided to start it. I’m so thankful that I did, it completely blew me away and has ended up being one of my all-time favorite reads.

Hidden Gem Book:

Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson. I found this book randomly, on amazon, before I was a blogger. I was intrigued by the title, so I decided to give it a shot. And this book rocks! I pretty much feel like Morgan Matson can do no wrong when it comes to writing, because her second book is just as spectacular.

Important Moment in your Reading Life:

Goodreads, for sure! Twilight is responsible for getting me interested in reading again, but if it weren’t for Goodreads I would have had no idea where to start when it came to finding other things I wanted to read. It’s also responsible for introducing me to the world of book blogging, prior to that I didn’t know book blogs even existed.

Just Finished:

Pure by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Kinds of Books You Won’t Read:

I don’t mind erotica from time to time, but I will not go anywhere near the BDSM erotica. I just can’t get into it, it makes me so uncomfortable.

Longest Book You’ve Read:

Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer

Major book hangover because of:

In Honor by Jessi Kirby…I thought about that one for days after I was finished.

Number of Bookcases You Own:

3, plus the piles of books I have everywhere

One Book You Have Read Multiple Times:

Something Like Normal by Trish Doller. I actually read this one twice while I had it as a review copy, and then read it again when I got my finished copy.

Preferred Place To Read:

I love reading curled up on the couch, but I actually do most of my reading in bed.

Quote that inspires you/gives you all the feels from a book you’ve read:

“No man really knows about other human beings. The best he can do is to suppose that they are like himself.” John Steinbeck – The Winter of Our Discontent

This book has got loads of amazing quotes, but this is my favorite.

Reading Regret:

I regret reading Divergent. All anyone I talked to insisted that it was the most amazing book and that I had to read it because there was no way I wouldn’t love it, and I put it off for a long time, because I am not a fan of the hype monster. I finally read it, because I really did hope it was going to be as amazing as everyone insisted and I wanted in on that series excitement, but I ended up not enjoying it at all. It read incredibly juvenile to me and I just didn’t enjoy the story. I regret this, because if I’d never picked it up in the first place, I’d always have that hope of loving it as much as everyone else.

Series You Started And Need To Finish(all books are out in series):

The Nightshade Series by Andrea Cremer. I’ve got all three of them, and I really enjoyed the first book, but I just never got around to finishing the series…one of these days.

Three of your All-Time Favorite Books:

In Honor by Jessi Kirby, Where She Went by Gayle Forman, and Something Like Normal by Trish Doller.

Unapologetic Fangirl For:

J.A. Souders. She’s actually the first author I ever met in person, and awkwardly asked if I could take a photo with, and she is an absolute doll. Not to mention I completely adore her book, Renegade. I have multiple signed copies of my own, but since she and I share a home state, I often get to attend events in which she is present. So I always purchase and have her sign another copy and then send it along to someone who I just know will adore it as much as I do :0)

Very Excited For This Release More Than All The Others:

The Unbound by Victoria Schwab. The Archived was the best start to a series I have ever had the pleasure of reading and I cannot wait until The Unbound is in my impatient little hands!

Worst Bookish Habit:

Giving away books before I’ve read them. I have so many books and, like most of you, not enough space. So, every once in a while, I’ll go through my shelves and pull out books that have been there for over a year and I’ve never touched, and they get to go to shiny new homes.

X Marks The Spot: Start at the top left of your shelf and pick the 27th book:

Hopeless by Colleen Hoover

Your latest book purchase:

Antigoddess by Kendare Blake. I haven’t been buying any new books lately, but I couldn’t resist that cover, and the epic sounding story housed within it.

ZZZ-snatcher book (last book that kept you up WAY late):

This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales. I stayed up all night reading that bad boy, so good!

Hope you guys enjoyed getting to know a little about my bookish habits :0)

Blog Tour: The Rule of Thirds by Chantel Guertin!

Hey guys! Thanks for popping in to my stop on The Rule of Thirds blog tour! A story about a girl who loves photography, her best friend, and adorable boys :0)

The Rule Of Thirds
By: Chantel Guertin
Release date: October 1st, 2013
Publisher: ECW Press
Sixteen-year-old Pippa Greene never goes anywhere without her camera. She and her best friend/supermodel-in-training Dace long ago mapped out their life plan: Pippa will be the noted fashion photographer, and Dace the cover girl. But ever since last spring, things have changed for Pippa—and her junior year at Spalding High proves to have its own set of challenges. Not only is Vantage Point, the statewide photography competition, in three short weeks, but her mandatory volunteering placement lands her at St. Christopher’s Hospital, a place Pippa never wanted to set foot in again. With humor and pluck, she navigates her new role as a candy striper (watch out for Code Yellows), her changing relationship with her best friend (goodbye, Honesty Pact), and—perhaps most stressful of all—her new love interests (yes, love interests plural). Will Pippa make it to Vantage Point without having a panic attack? Will either one of the guys prove less sketchy than her last boyfriend? Can she and Dace figure out a way to dream big and be best friends? One thing is certain: real life is a lot more complicated than a photograph.

The Rule of Thirds is a story about Pippa Greene, she's really just a regular teenage girl with the regular teenage girl thoughts and worries. She's got a best friend who acts a little larger than life, but you just know underneath there are some major insecurities that make her behave the way she does. And of course there are adorable boys, two that have caught Pippa's eye in particular. There is Dylan, the boy that she's been crushing on forever, but she's pretty sure he doesn't really know she exists. And there's Ben, the new guy in school who shares her passion, but has something a little mysterious about him. Being somewhat of a photographer (or at least lover of taking photos) myself, I found a lot of common ground with Pippa. I didn't always agree with her decisions and I definitely wanted to shake her on occasion, but stumbling your way through life is kind of what being a teenager is all about.

Overall I enjoyed The Rule of Thirds, it was fun and entertaining, but also had some serious and sad moments. Chantel definitely did a good job of blending it altogether and for the most part I don't have any real gripes about the story, but there was one thing near the end that bugged me like no other. I won't go into it, because I don't want to spoil anything, but it was a pretty major thing that was left almost completely unresolved. Something that might be able to redeem it, though, is the fact that this book is now going to be part of a series. At the time that I read the book I didn't know that this was even a possibility, so the ending wasn't working for me. While I still wish there was a little more resolution, now that we'll get more of Pippa and her world, I'm confident it will addressed in a future book. And if another book does in fact come out, I will definitely be on board to read it :0)
