"Halflings" by Heather Burch

Release Date: February 1st, 2012
Publisher: Zondervan
Format: eGalley
Age Group: Young Adult

After being inexplicably targeted by an evil intent on harming her at any cost, seventeen-year-old Nikki finds herself under the watchful guardianship of three mysterious young men who call themselves halflings. Sworn to defend her, misfits Mace, Raven, and Vine battle to keep Nikki safe while hiding their deepest secret—and the wings that come with.

A growing attraction between Nikki and two of her protectors presents a whole other danger. While she risks a broken heart, Mace and Raven could lose everything, including their souls. As the mysteries behind the boys’ powers, as well as her role in a scientist’s dark plan, unfold, Nikki is faced with choices that will affect the future of an entire race of heavenly beings, as well as the precarious equilibrium of the earthly world.

I liked HALFLINGS. I thought it was a well told story and I respected the main character, but I didn't love it. It could have something to do with reading two angel books one after the other, but it didn't suck me in like some other stories I've read recently.

It starts off throwing you right into the action. Nikki is literally running for her life, from beings that shouldn't even exist in our world. Mace and Raven are watching from above, waiting until the exact right moment to swoop in and save her. They are supposed to remain unseen, but Nikki spots them and she doesn't forget. The two of them start to ingrain themselves in Nikki's life and she is drawn to both of them. The problem is, they can never actually be with her, because it would damn them forever. I don't really have a team on this one, because the consequences are so large if she really is with one of them and I really didn't connect with one guy more than the other. Though I did like their younger brother, Vine.

There is also some shady stuff going on that involves Nikki's parents and an old family friend. As Nikki and the boys start discovering what's really going on, a terrible tragedy befalls them and suddenly it seems like there is even more at stake. I am curious to see where Heather takes this story and how the relationships evolve between Nikki, Mace and Raven. While this wasn't a complete hit for me, I think I definitely will give the second book a try when it comes out.

  1. Oh, I'm sorry this one fell flat for you, Sarah. I have it on NetGalley as well, but haven't gotten to it yet. I hate when I can't relate to characters or connect with any of them. :( It sucks a lot of the greatness out of the story for me. :/ Hopefully, the sequel will be better!

  2. I think it's hard for angel books to stand out today; the market is saturated with them. They have to be both original and just generally fantastic, in the writing, the plot, and the characters. This one sounds decent, but not like anything particularly new. I may take a look at it, though, just out of curiosity.

  3. I didn't know you read it!!! And I still loved it :P Fallen Angels are the new Vampires though, so it's hard to do one that hasn't been seen before. Hopefully, you enjoy the next one better....
