Girl Out of Water by Laura Silverman

Girl Out of Water by Laura Silverman
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Release Date: May 2nd, 2017

*I received an e-copy via Netgalley for an honest opinion

Anise Sawyer plans to spend every minute of summer with her friends: surfing, chowing down on fish tacos drizzled with wasabi balsamic vinegar, and throwing bonfires that blaze until dawn. But when a serious car wreck leaves her aunt, a single mother of three, with two broken legs, it forces Anise to say goodbye for the first time to Santa Cruz, the waves, her friends, and even a kindling romance, and fly with her dad to Nebraska for the entire summer. Living in Nebraska isn’t easy. Anise spends her days caring for her three younger cousins in the childhood home of her runaway mom, a wild figure who’s been flickering in and out of her life since birth, appearing for weeks at a time and then disappearing again for months, or even years, without a word.

Complicating matters is Lincoln, a one-armed, charismatic skater who pushes Anise to trade her surfboard for a skateboard. As Anise draws closer to Lincoln and takes on the full burden and joy of her cousins, she loses touch with her friends back home – leading her to one terrifying question: will she turn out just like her mom and spend her life leaving behind the ones she loves

I loved that this book was, at it's heart, about family and what it means. Anise could be completely bratty and self-centered at times, but when it really came down to it she was there for her family. She came to learn that everything isn't just about her, but that there are other people whose feelings and needs matter. Since she has always lived in the same place, I think it was really great to see her plopped in the middle of somewhere completely foreign to her and watch her figure out a little more about herself and about life. I also really appreciated the fact that her mom never showed up in the book. I think that would have been too cliché and unrealistic, but even though she never came, I like that we got to see Anise sort out her relationship with her mother and come to terms with it in some ways. I loved the attention shown to the importance of friendships and being there for people, even when it's not the easiest choice to make. There were definitely times that Anise didn't always make the right choice, at least initially, but she did a lot of growing up during this story and it was an awesome thing to read.

The romance in this was absolutely adorable and Lincoln is one of the best characters I have read in a contemporary YA novel. I loved his attitude and the way he took on life despite the curve balls it has thrown him along the way. He is just an all around nice guy, but not in that boring way nice guys can sometimes be portrayed in books and movies. He is funny and spontaneous and here to take on life. Anise definitely grew from the short time she knew him in this novel, and I feel like she will grow to become an even better person for having him in her life.

Contemporaries are a favorite of mine, but even so, I can still get pretty critical. Especially when stories just start sounding like different shades of the same basic premise. That was not a problem with Girl Out of Water. It felt new and exciting, and I had so much fun reading it. Definitely recommend!

  21. Laura Silverman is an incredible woman and fantastic author. At the moment, actual *literal* nazis are targeting her and spamming her reviews with *literal* nazi propaganda. Trust me when I say this woman is a force to be reckoned with and does not deserve this deplorable treatment. I have not yet read her book, but when it comes out I am buying a copy for me and all of my friends, because she is THAT good.

Please don't let the disgusting nature of the people attacking her sway you. They are trash, and she is absolutely wonderful. https://www.affordablelectricians.com.au/electrician-mitcham.html

  22. Girl Out of Water is a story about Anise and her summer away from home. The summer before her senior year of high school Anise is being forced to spend the summer helping care for her aunt that was severely injured in a car crash. She is also there to help take care of her three younger cousins. Anise had all kinds of plans for her summer and her friends. She is having a hard time getting over the fact that she won't be there to experience all those plans and that she will be leaving California (and her love of surfing) for the first time. Nebraska is a far cry from the beaches she is used to and at first she can't find any joy in being there (other than said cousins). However, during a trip to a skate park with her cousins she meets Lincoln. Lincoln is a very good skateboarder and he is missing one arm. Anise finds it hard to back down from a challenge that Lincoln lays on her. She also is learning how to navigate his disability since she does not know the right way to approach that conversation.

This book is a really good coming of age story for Anise. She has to come to grips about people changing (herself included) and learning that someone else's past (the mom that left her) does not dictate how she will turn out. Anise learns how not to be forgotten and what is really important. This is a great read about summer, friends, and first loves! contact us

  46. This book is delightful — a charming and romantic beach read, but with depth. California girl Anise’s summer plans are turned upside down when she’s forced to make an extended trip to Nebraska to help care for her young cousins. There, she meets dreamy skateboarder, Lincoln, who challenges her in both silly and significant ways. She also begins to confront the baggage that’s come along with her mother’s abandonment. There’s even a mini road trip in this story, cementing its status as a Katy Book. Laura Silverman’s prose is an unusual but appealing blend of lyrical and gritty, dropping me right into Anise’s world. If you’re a fan of Sarah Dessen and Emery Lord, definitely pick up Girl Out of Water! AH

  48. I read this book cover to cover in two days. I was captivated by the characters, character development and the quality of the storytelling. I am a parent who has raised my kids at the beach. They have spent their lives on surfboards and skateboards. I read this book because the author is the child of friends of friends. The subject matter intrigued me because I have lived watching the story in my own backyard. I was flabbergasted by the quality of technical detail that the author put into the story. For EZ readability I put this in the category of my favorite authors of fun novels.
