If given the opportunity, what sixteen-year-old wouldn't jump at the chance to move in with a friend and live parent-free? Although maybe "opportunity" isn't the right word, since April had to tell her dad a tiny little untruth to make it happen (see #1: "Lied to Our Parents"). But she and her housemate Vi are totally responsible and able to take care of themselves. How they ended up "Skipping School" (#3), "Throwing a Crazy Party" (#8), "Buying a Hot Tub" (#4), and, um, "Harboring a Fugitive" (#7) at all is kind of a mystery to them.
In this hilarious and bittersweet tale, Sarah Mlynowski mines the heart and mind of a girl on her own for the first time. To get through the year, April will have to juggle a love triangle, learn to do her own laundry, and accept that her carefully constructed world just might be falling apart . . . one thing-she-shouldn't-have-done at a time.
This book had a fun premise. What teenager doesn't dream about living on their own with a best friend? It opens with a "Hangover"-esque scene, but then goes back to the beginning to give you a full retelling of the girls misadventures. I liked the main character April, but I thought she was too oblivious and naive at times. She was a fun storyteller and I enjoyed reading from her point of view. From the beginning I wasn't a huge fan of her boyfriend Noah, his character was just really uninteresting to me. I think my favorite character was Dean. He was cracking me up everytime he was on the page! Hudson was swoony and sweet, and his secret job was a fun twist. There was a little more focus on all things sex than I might have liked, but it wasn't enough to stop me from reading and enjoying the rest of the story. I found the emails between the "parents" completely amusing. I think that is due, in large part, to the fact that I don't believe any pair of teenagers could ever get away with this for as long as these girls did. That didn't mean it wasn't fun, though :0)
I really enjoyed reading it and i was sad when i finished it because i didnt want it to end. I liked how it was a little edgy and not your typical teen goody-goody book. I also thought it was written in a unique style, with lists and emails and random thoughts inserted throughout. I highly reccommend!
